Whether you’re trying to quit overeating or smoking, think about the one time when you’re most likely to engage in your bad behavior—say, while you watch TV at night. Now come up with a single “if-then goal,” as the dieters did in the study. For example, “If I feel hungry while watching TV, I’ll eat an apple.” You’ll be snacking less in no time, the study finds.

Sip the black stuff to beat the blues. Harvard School of Public Health researchers reviewed the drinking habits of more than 200,000 people over 16 years and found that two to three cups of coffee a day slashed suicide risk by up to 50 percent.

Meanwhile, beverages like soda, tea, and decaf coffee had no effect on the statistics.

The caffeine in java could have a protective effect against depression and some neurological diseases like Parkinson’s disease, says lead study author Michel Lucas, Ph.D.

Caffeine acts as a mild antidepressant, targeting the same neurotransmitters that many drugs used to treat depression do, he adds.

While a few cups of Joe may cheer you up, researchers still aren’t sure how caffeine affects mood in the long run. Just remember to limit your daily coffee quota; previous studies have shown an increased risk of suicide as people start consuming more than eight cups a day, Lucas says. (The same amount as three grandes from Starbucks.)

Christopher Winter, M.D., medical director of the Sleep Medicine Center at Martha Jefferson Hospital.

While those deficiencies are enough to put anyone in a foul mood, Dr. Winter says there’s also some evidence of increased activity in the amygdala, which regulates emotions like anger and rage, in the sleep-challenged. The way your brain communicates with the amygdala after persistent poor sleep not only fosters negative emotions, but leaves you less capable of controlling those bad feelings, Dr. Winter adds.

Should you stop taking fish oil? A new study in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that men with the highest concentrations of omega-3 fatty acids in their blood had a 71 percent greater risk for developing a deadly type of prostate cancer.

While a stat like that may sound worrisome, a closer look at the research shows there’s no reason to toss your fish oil supplement, or take mackerel off the menu.

“The most important thing to know is that this is not a definitive finding,” says Men’s Health‘s urology advisor, Larry Lipshultz, M.D., of Baylor College of Medicine. “This type of study shows a correlation, but it does not prove causation.” In other words, it wasn’t a controlled clinical trial in which some men swallowed fish oil and others didn’t.

Instead, researchers looked at levels of certain omega-3 fatty acids in participants’ blood and watched who developed prostate cancer and who didn’t over time—but the method the researchers used wasn’t great, says Chris Mohr, Ph.D., R.D., The Belly Off! Club nutritionist.

The guys in the study had their blood drawn once a year. “It’s a small snapshot of what was in their blood at those times instead of a clear picture of their long-term chronic intake of omega-3 fatty acids,” Mohr says. “If you just had a salmon dinner the night before, your levels would be way higher than what’s actually average for you.”

Also complicating matters: The fact that researchers didn’t set out to determine an association between omega-3s and prostate cancer in the first place. The findings were extrapolated from a study that looked at whether selenium and vitamin E protect against prostate cancer. (They don’t). The researchers just also happened to gather information on omega-3 blood levels, which wasn’t very useful.

The bottom line? Studies showing the protective effects of omega-3 fatty acids for heart, brain, eye health and more are much stronger and numerous than this one, Mohr says. More controlled clinical trials are needed to give the prostate-cancer link any legs—or, er, fins. Today I am going to share with you are couple of my favourite cardio workouts from Youtube. Both are cardio circuits and only last 10 minutes, but in the ten minutes expect to work very hard, sweat buckets, get your heart beat racing and burn a load of calories. The ten minutes are packed full of exercises that you have to give 110%. That is what circuit training is about, a series of workouts that you only have to complete for a short time, but you have to give it your maximum effort. The chopping and changing between the moves keeps your body guessing and works it harder, so you get result quicker! Who doesn’t want that!

I love to cram one of these workouts in in the morning. All you have to do is get up 15 minutes earlier and you can burn upto 100 calories to start the day and get your metabolism racing for the rest of the day so your body burns more calories than it would if you weren't’ to do your morning workout. If I don’t manage a morning workout then I do two cardio videos in the evening alongside 3-4 ten minute strength workouts. That way I get a solid 1 hour of exercise that  incorporates both cardio and strength in the same session so my body works harder. The first video is one of my ultimate favs as it reminds me very much if the exercises that we do at bootcamp class.

Researchers recruited 10 healthy, active guys in their 20s and compared how they performed in 20-minute all-out cycling sessions under cool (52 degrees Fahrenheit), hot (88 degrees F), and sleep-deprived conditions. Not surprisingly, the participants were sluggish in the heat. More surprising: The athletes cycled just as far after not sleeping a wink as they did when fully rested in ideal, cool conditions.

But despite their ability to do their best while feeling groggy, the participants underestimated how far they’d cycled in 20 minutes by an average of 1 kilometer. In other words, a lack of sleep only affected the athletes’ performance in their heads, the researchers say.

So while you may misjudge your performance in a race following a restless night, know that your actual results shouldn’t suffer. (Unless that restless night included booze: Research shows that alcohol intake leads to dehydration and impairs important metabolic processes during exercise.)

Cortisol isn’t all bad, though. The hormone actually helps you get up and go in the morning, Jobin says. The study found that when stressed, optimists had higher levels of cortisol upon waking than their grumpier counterparts—the happy people just used the hormone more effectively. “Optimists wake up ready to problem-solve and face challenges,” Jobin says.

Looking on the bright side is easier said than done, and research shows that being an optimist or pessimist is a personality trait that tends to stick with you. But you can follow your jolly friends’ lead by outlining possible solutions when a stressful scenario presents itself. Even if you don’t solve the problem that minute, planning out how you might fix it helps you feel calmer and in control, says Jobin.

Rinse, then brush. Wait at least 30 minutes after a meal to brush your teeth. Acid from food is strongest right after you finish a meal, so brushing right away does more harm than good, Dr. Wolff says. Instead, rinse your mouth with water after every meal to neutralize some of the acid first.

Chew it over. Chewing gum stimulates saliva, which neutralizes acid. Choose a brand that contains xylitol, a sugar-free sweetener that has been proven to have an effect on bacteria that causes tooth decay, says Dr. Wolff.

Even when the researchers sterilized a ball before a game, the ball still transferred Staph. a from the floor to the players.

That’s not the only way bacteria gets transmitted in the gym, says study author Joshua A. Cotter, Ph.D. You also need to wipe down surfaces like toilets, showers, and benches with an antiseptic or Clorox wipes.

But the biggest cold-causing culprit—the equipment—is tougher to tackle. A study in the Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine found rhinoviruses (instigators of the common cold) on 63 percent of the gym equipment at the fitness centers they tested, and discovered that weight equipment was contaminated significantly more than aerobic equipment (73 percent versus 51 percent.) Even worse: The study found that disinfecting the equipment twice a day didn’t do anything to lower the virus count.

The solution: Avoid touching your face between sets, since most colds are transmitted through hand-to-nose contact. And make sure to pack an alcohol-based hand sanitizer in your gym bag.

Is your doctor snap-happy? Physicians order too many echocardiograms, or ultrasound pictures of the heart, says a new study from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

Researchers found that of 500 patients who had the test, which is used to diagnose heart defects, less than one third changed their treatment plans afterward. This suggests that the test provided no new information, says study coauthor Sandeep R. Das, M.D.

Echocardiograms have few physical risks, explains Jerald Insel, M.D., chief of cardiology at MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital. And that could be why docs over-order them.

The problem: The tests are expensive—much pricier than an EKG or an exercise stress test—and a minor abnormality in your heart’s structure (that may never cause problems) could unnecessarily freak you out or lead to unneeded follow-up tests. On the other hand, a normal result could provide false reassurance, since heart problems can always develop later on, says Dr. Das.

If your doc wants to order an echocardiogram, first ask why, advises Dr. Das. Sign up for these reasons: To identify the cause of heart symptoms like an irregular heartbeat or shortness of breath; if you have high blood pressure; or if you a family history of heart disease (to check for heart muscle damage), Dr. Insel says.

Just land a job interview? When it comes to getting hired, your body size may play a bigger role than your résumé, suggests new research from Bowling Green State University.

After grad school applicants went through in-person interviews, candidates with a body mass index north of 25—the typical cutoff point between “normal” and “overweight”—were 27 percent less likely to score an admission invite than their trimmer co-applicants. Researchers conducted the same experiment using phone-only interviews, and found no difference in admission rates between heavy or slim candidates.

It’s possible some interviewers have built-in prejudices against overweight applicants—call it the fat bias—who they may (unconsciously) view as lazy or undisciplined because of their size, says study coauthor Jacob Burmeister. If that’s the case, there’s not much you can do but drop weight or clean up your style, which may help offset unfair weight stereotypes.

But don’t blame the interviewer just yet. It’s also possible overweight candidates perform poorly during interviews because their weight saps their confidence or makes them uncomfortable, Burmeister adds. Whether or not you’re overweight, spending a few minutes pre-interview thinking about a time when you kicked butt and were in control can boost your odds of landing the job by 81 percent, says a recent study in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology.

Githaiga was in a state of mental anguish – he had never had any major health problems in his life yet there he was, seated on his hospital bed passing stool through a hole in his abdomen.

Nothing made sense anymore. His doctor had told him that he had colon cancer (cancer of the large intestine) and that he needed surgery, but nothing prepared him for his new life.

Prior to his cancer diagnosis, Githaiga was your average middle-aged Kenyan man. He was a successful, mid-level manager of a local bank. He worked hard and often found himself eating snacks at his desk and leaving work late.

He was a little overweight – thanks to his love for roasted goat meat and beer, but he took pride in his chubby form.

In his opinion and that of those around him, it was a sign that he was happy and content. Between work and family commitments, he rarely went to the gym - he just couldn’t find the time. So when he first noticed that he was losing weight, he put it down to the stresses of work and ignored it.

He didn’t consider going to hospital for check-ups because he believed that ‘you don’t go to hospital when your are well unless you are looking for trouble!’ He, therefore, first visited his doctor when he was alarmed at finding blood in his stool. That was one month ago. Now he had had surgery and was facing months ahead of chemotherapy.

The colon is also known as the large intestine. The lower part of this intestine is known as the rectum - which opens into the anus.

You can, therefore, have cancer of the colon, rectum or anus. Under normal circumstances, the cells lining the intestines are constantly being shed and replenished to allow for normal body function.

Colon cancer happens when the body produces cells in a disorganised and abnormal manner. Usually, this takes place over ma ny months or even years and that is why cancer screening is an important way of catching this disease before it fully develops and spreads.

Interestingly, colorectal cancer was rare among black Africans a few decades ago. But it has shown a rapid increase in incidence over the past few years. This is thought to be as a result of dietary changes.

We used to have a diet almost exclusively of unprocessed foods, high in fibre and generally low in fat but this has slowly been replaced over the years as we have adopted new eating habits.

There is still a lot of research going into the role of diet in colon cancer development.

How does it present?

In the initial stages, there are no symptoms. Like all cancers, it is a silent predator. Most people notice a change in their bowel habits first. Either you find yourself getting constipation or diarrhoea without any change in your eating habits.

You may also notice some blood in your stool. There can also be abdominal pain or discomfort. Some people get excessive gas and tend to bloat. You may also feel as though you have not fully voided each time you go to the toilet. As it progresses, you will notice weight loss.

What can you do?

Unfortunately, the risk factors listed above almost all describe most urban people in Kenya. Even though you cannot 100 per cent prevent colorectal cancer, certain things have been found to be useful.

Screening

This should start at the age of 50 for most people or at 40 for people with a family history of colorectal cancer. Screening involves doing a general physical examination, a st ool test and a special examination known as a colonoscopy, which is a test in which a special probe (pipe) with a video recorder attached to it is put into your rectum and up your intestines.

It is done under anaesthesia (sedation). This is a short procedure and does not require admission to a hospital. It is usually done once every 10 years as a screening tool. Some doctors also do special radiographs (x-rays) known as barium enemas as part of their screening.

Lifestyle changes

Eat a diet rich in fibre and low in fat. Try and maintain a healthy weight. Stop smoking and keep alcohol intake to a minimum.

General health

Make sure any polyps or intestinal conditions are adequately taken care of. Most polyps need removal.

There’s a routine for delicious cuisine: Performing a ritual before eating could improve the taste of food, says new research from the University of Minnesota.

In an experiment, participants either opened a bar of chocolate under a specific set of instructions—for example, breaking the bar in half before unwrapping it—or ate it normally. People who went through the routine enjoyed their food more, spent more time eating, and said the chocolate was more flavorful than the non-ritual group.

When you act out a tradition—like setting the table or blowing out the candles of a birthday cake—you zoom in on what you’re doing. This is a process called “involvement,” says lead researcher Kathleen Vohs, Ph.D. Involvement is similar to mindfulness, and helps you enjoy the moment more, she adds.

Try it out by cutting your food into smaller bites before eating. You may get more enjoyment out of your meal, and one study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that people who took large bites of food consumed 52 percent more calories in one sitting than those who took small bites and chewed longer.

Freeze! Turning your sports drink into a slushy can boost your exercise endurance by 10 percent, according to new Australian research,

In a small study, 10 men pedaled on a bike for 90 minutes at 62 percent of their VO2 max and consumed a sports drink either as a slushy or at a neutral temperature. The results: Guys who slurped the slushy pedaled faster and reported a lower rate of perceived exertion.

The icy beverage works by absorbing heat from your stomach, allowing it to dissipate during exercise, says Alan Aragon, M.S., Men’s Health nutrition advisor. Why that’s important: Elevations in body temperature during exercise can affect cognitive ability and motivation, and even increase central fatigue—all of which can lead to impairments in exercise performance, Aragon says.

The scientists believe ice in the mouth also has a beneficial sensory effect, potentially distracting from a workout’s intensity. In the study, some men used the slushy as you would a mouthwash—i.e. they didn’t swallow it—and still reported lower perceived exertion.

While study subjects consumed about a cup of slushy every 15 minutes, Aragon says you can even take in a bit less. Five to 10 ounces every 15 to 20 minutes is a good guideline, depending on your intensity and environment (and if it’s extra hot outside). Don’t have time to throw your Gatorade in the freezer? Other research has found similar, temperature-regulating benefits from freezing cold (but not frozen) beverages.

Are antioxidants the anti-gym? In a new Danish study, men who took supplements of resveratrol—the powerhouse antioxidant found in red wine—saw their cardiovascular benefits from exercise shrink by 45 percent compared to guys who popped a placebo.

But don’t put down that glass of vino just yet. A closer look at the numbers reveals that the men in the study took a 250-milligram (mg) supplement of resveratrol—exponentially more than what you’d find in everyday foods and drinks. For example, red wine contains between 1 and 9 mg of resveratrol per bottle. (You’d have to knock back almost 28 bottles in one sitting to take in 250 mg. Read: not recommended.) And in general, antioxidants like resveratrol are good for exercise, since they reduce inflammation to aid recovery.

Large doses, though, give muscles too much of a free pass. Exercise generates some “bad” free radicals—which high doses of antioxidant supplements can completely suppress. While you’d think you’d want that, doing so limits your body’s ability to recover on its own, says Michael Joyner, M.D., an exercise researcher at the Mayo Clinic. You need some free radicals to “turn on” the recovery process, help your body adapt to stress, and improve performance, Joyner adds.

The bottom line: Less is often better. Stick to sources like blueberries, dark chocolate, peanuts, and red wine to reap the benefits of antioxidants. Bonus: You’ll also get other health-promoting vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients from the foods.

I don't know about you but I treated myself to a number of Illamasqua products when they had their celebratory 50% off sale last month. I have always wanted to try their products, but couldn't justify the price for something which I didn't know was any good.

So I ordered this lipstick and an eyebrow colouring. I decided to pick a bright lipstick as at the moment the lipstick I am buying all tend to be of a similar shade, so I wanted something that stood out and would look amazing on nights out and I think I have found it. I ordered the Illamasqua Eurydice and I admit when it first came and I opened it up, I was in shock at how Barbie pink it is and wasn’t too keen, but upon application I have grown to like it.

Now I'm not the biggest fan on the formula as I find that it drags a lot on my lips, so putting it on can be tricky. I don’t know whether this is because it is a very matte shade. But this difficulty in application is overlooked thanks to its the staying power and pigmentation; after one coat my lips are good to go, and stay in place for a good few hours.

I haven’t worn this shade much since I bought it as I haven’t had the occasion to. I think it’s a little too bright for the office but I managed to rock it on my holiday with my bikini, tan, beach waves and giant sunglasses… I think it looked very glam!

Up to 85 percent of Americans are afflicted by lower back pain, according to the Clinical Journal of Pain. While most alignment ailments tend to resolve with rest, these injuries still put you at high risk for a chronic condition, and possibly a serious disability. So researchers looked through multiple studies to determine the effects of yoga on sore vertebrae and found that the activity helped people ease both short- and long-term discomfort.

The reason: Yoga works parts of your body in ways they aren’t typically challenged when you exercise, says David Romanelli, cofounder of At One Yoga in Scottsdale, Arizona. Conventional workout routines build strength, but they also create tightness, and when you don’t loosen certain spots—like your hamstrings and hips—you become more susceptible to injuries, especially in your back.

The Forward Fold
Stand with your feet hip-width apart, gently hinge forward at the hips, and lower the torso toward the floor. Breathe deeply and let gravity take the body toward the ground. Relax your head, neck, shoulders and torso. Slowly sway your torso or gently shake your head. Wrap your head around this: Expensive sports helmets with lots of padding may not offer greater protection, according to new research from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. When researchers recorded the age, price, and brand of 2,000 high school athletes’ football helmets, it appeared that none of those factors had any impact on who got concussions and who didn’t.

Turns out, adding more features—like additional padding—makes a helmet seem safer, but it doesn’t reduce the force your brain experiences during a tackle, says study author Timothy McGuine, Ph.D. Think of your brain like an egg: If you wrap it in enough padding before dropping it, you can prevent the shell from cracking, but no amount of padding will stop the yolk—your brain—from getting scrambled, explains McGuine.

But there is a way to upgrade you and your kids’ headwear for some activities: Look for products that have MIPS technology on the packaging. While it’s not yet available for football helmets, you’ll find it is used in protective gear made for cycling, snow, and equestrian sports.

The reason: Concussions aren’t just a result of the force of crashing, but how quickly your head rotates, according to a George Washington University study. When your noggin twists quickly, it causes tiny tears in the tissue that carries information. MIPS technology is designed to lessen the rotational energy by letting parts of the helmet slip over one another, dissipating the force.

Researchers discovered fewer wasted nutrients in the fecal samples of people who chewed almonds 40 times before swallowing, compared to those who chomped down just 10 or 25 times. In a similar experiment, some of the same researchers found 40 chews ups your body’s absorption of healthy nutrients by roughly 25 percent compared to fewer bites.

Chewing breaks down the almond’s cellular walls, making the good stuff in the nut’s cells more accessible, explains study coauthor Richard D. Mattes, Ph.D., R.D., a professor of nutrition science at Purdue.

Of course, no one has the time to count that many bites. Mattes says blending almonds and other healthy foods into smoothies (like this delicious cherry-almond concoction) is an easier method to maximize cellular breakdown and amplify the amount of nutrients your body needs.

But the truth is, you can’t go wrong with almonds any way you eat ‘em: Eat a third of a cup a day—no teeth workout required.

Better rush to shrink that gut. The more years of young adulthood you spend obese, the greater your risk of coronary artery calcification—early, “silent” heart disease with no symptoms—in middle age, says a new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

In fact, each extra year of obesity between ages 18 and 30 boosts your risk by 2 to 4 percent. Though you don’t notice it, the calcification predicts your risk of future heart problems.

“While 2 to 4 percent per year doesn’t seem very high, this risk adds up over many years and therefore becomes more and more substantial over time,” says study author Jared P. Reis, Ph.D.

The results confirm that losing extra pounds as soon as you can—and keeping them off—tops the list of ways to protect your heart, Reis says. Need motivation? Aim to drop 2 to 4 pounds each week rather than 3. Setting a goal with a high and low range will make you more likely to actively pursue it, according to new Florida State University research.

Scientists offered stressed-out students both nutritious fare (like fruit) and not-so-great snacks (like cookies), then asked the students how often they ate those foods during a normal week when they weren’t cramming for exams. The results: In crunch time, the students still picked their most habitual snacks, regardless of healthiness.

What that means: Even at times of peak stress, when you expect willpower to crumble (and indulgence to be at an all-time-high), you go with what you’re used to. That’s why eating right and exercising “are real investments when times are stress-free,” says lead researcher David Neal, Ph.D.

In other words, your healthy habits pay off when your self-control is low. That’s great news if you already opt for a handful of almonds over a Snickers bar, but it takes a little more time and practice to break out of a bad pattern.

To develop a new routine, pick just one thing at a time and stay consistent, Neal advises. Want to be a regular at the gym? You’re probably thinking, well, duh—of course you need to be more than a brick wall on the first date. But it’s a little more complex than that: You have to show her you understand what she’s saying by talking about your own similar experiences or feelings, explains study coauthor Susan Sprecher, Ph.D., of Illinois State University. If your deep, dark confessions have nothing to do with hers, you’re less likely to form a bond, Sprecher says.

Your plan: Follow her lead. Ask her how she gets along with her boss, and jump in with stories about your own mishaps with the head honcho. Try to match the tone and gravity of her disclosures, says Sprecher. If she’s telling you about arguing with her sister, launching into the story of your brother’s struggle with cancer may be a tad too dramatic—but a painfully awkward tale about an old family vacation? Just right.

Narrow your sights to land a job you love, advises career expert Nicole Williams, connections director for LinkedIn. Her advice: Use the social networking service to do an advanced search for people who already hold the position you want at similar companies. Don’t be pushy or ask for a job; instead, send a personal note asking your contact if you can pick his brain for a few minutes about what his day-to-day entails. You’ll make another connection and figure out which jobs are right for you.

I have had what seems like a very busy July! I’ve been on holiday, been to the races and also saw Michael Buble at the beginning of the month. As I had such a fabulous time I thought I would share with you some of the pictures of my mini break to London. Matt bought me the Michael Buble tickets as part of my Christmas present so I have spent the past 6 months in anticipation for this weekend so I’m sure you can understand just how excited I was. I am a massive Michael Buble fan (yes I’m so uncool) and have never seen him live before so this was the best Christmas present I could if asked for.

< p align="center">We had tickets for the Friday night so we took a train from Leeds to London at lunchtime to arrive in good time to get to our hotel and get some dinner in Greenwich. We had a wander around the Royal Naval College and took in some sun before heading for dinner. After eating dinner we headed back to our hotel to freshen up and took the tube to the O2 arena for the show.

The show was everything I imagined and so much more. I was completely overwhelmed  that I even had a tear in my eye when he sang my favourite songs. He sung perfectly  and has such a great personality so he had some great banter with the crowd.. even Matt was impressed! At the end of his show he took off all his microphone equipment and still managed to fill the entire arena with just his voice… it was so silent as everyone took it in, that you would of heard a pin drop. After the show we went for drinks in Canary Warf and retreated back to ou r hotel after a few glasses of wine.

The next day was a scorcher so we were up early and made the most of our time in London. Having not really had an leisurely time in London whenever I have visited it, we decided to take our time and act like tourist for the day taking in the sights on London and wandering around the many beautiful streets in Kensington and Chelsea. We were underwhelmed with Oxford street after realising that the street has the same stores along it but just 500 meters apart, we headed to Hyde Park for a make shift picnic from Sainsburys. After our rest and sunbath we headed over to Harrods so I could pick up some macaroons from Laduree. When I lived in France my friend and I would visit Paris purely for the macaroons. We spend a good few afternoons sat in the Jardin des Tuileries nibbling on them in the sun… nothing beats them in my eyes! Matt went for the salted caramel and vanilla and I had pistachio and chocolate.

After a very long but enjoyable day wandering around London we hopped on the train and headed back to Leeds that evening for a barbeque with matts family… I was very happy to finally rest my very achy feet! Overall I had the most perfect weekend with my two favourite men (Matt and Buble). It was definitely worth the 6 month wait for my Christmas present!
