Close Your Eyes for Better Skin

Close Your Eyes for Better Skin

exhausted and tired

Beauty sleep isn’t just for the ladies. A lack of shuteye could make you age faster and recover from sunburn slower, finds a new study from the University Hospitals Case Medical Center.

The clinical trial found that sunburn redness lasted longer in poor sleepers after a period of 72 hours, while people with full rest had 30 percent higher rates of recovery. Researchers also found that those who had trouble snoozing scored two times worse on a test that measured signs of aging.

Sleep quality is vital to the growth and renewal of the body’s immune and physiological systems, the researchers say. And sleep deprivation can affect the hormones produced in response to stress, like cortisol, a natural anti-inflammatory, says David Orentreich, M.D. Insulin is also affected by lack of sleep, which hampers your immune system’s ability to deal with the stress of injury (like sunburn), he says.

Your fix (aside from getting more sleep): Use a moisturizer like Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion+ ($26; clinique.com). It contains ingredients that hydrate and strengthen the skin barrier—perfect if you’re struggling with sleep, since lacking ZZZs makes your skin dehydrated.
