You know how some songs are pretty much ingrained in your brain? You could hear them for the first time in a decade and immediately start singing along to the lyrics without missing a beat. That's the kind of music that a group of researchers in Europe, in partnership with Manchester's Museum of Science and Industry, are looking into.
The researchers created a citizen science experiment online called #HookedonMusic. It's an online game during which you listen to an assortment of 220 tracks divided into about 1,000 clips and try to ID the songs as quickly as you can and also pick which of two sections you find catchiest.
The researchers are using the results to determine what makes music memorable—what's really cool is that their findings could possibly be used for further research on dementia and Alzheimer's.
On a less serious but also super-neat note, they've also used their findings to compile the list below of the top 10 catchiest tunes. Seriously, they are so darn catchy! According to the BBC, the researchers used data from more than 12,000 participants to put together the list, which is based on how many seconds it took listeners to recognize the respective songs. You basically can't not bust a move when you listen to it, so use it as a playlist when you really need music to get you pepped up and to the gym!
