What You Need to Know About the New Celeb #WakeUpCall Craze

What You Need to Know About the New Celeb #WakeUpCall Craze

Other than the fact that bedhead is now officially acceptable

If there’s one thing celebrities absolutely love, it’s selfies. And lately, they’ve gotten to justify their obsession by posting them as part of a campaign for a cause. First there was the #NoMakeUpSelfie craze, in which women posted shots of themselves without makeup on to raise money for Cancer Research U.K. Then, there was the famed Ice Bucket Challenge, in which they (and probably you, too) posted videos of themselves dumping ice water on their heads to support awareness of and research for the disease ALS, which stands for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. As you likely know, the craze also included nominating others to do the same by tagging them on social media. And now there’s a new selfie campaign taking hold: the #WakeUpCall craze.

The rising trend is a combo of the #NoMakeUpSelfie and the Ice Bucket Challenge. Celebrities post pictures of themselves first thing in the morning, before they’ve even brushed their hair (or their teeth), and then hashtag it #wakeupcall, encourage people to text SYRIA to 70007, and nominate three other people to do the same.

The viral social media campaign raises money through Unicef, a United Nations program that provides help to children and mothers in developing countries. All donations in this case go specifically to Unicef’s Syria Children’s Emergency, which is a campaign to provide help for the children in Syria, who’ve seen brutal violence and are suffering from life-threatening injuries, malnutrition, and dehydration, among other serious conditions. The donations help Unicef provide them with clean water, hygiene kits, medicine, and psychological support.

Now, the most important thing here is the cause itself, obviously. Having said that, the celebrity #wakeupcall selfies themselves are also notable—especially when they’re as cute as Tom Hiddleston’s:

#WAKEUPCALL Text SYRIA to 70007 to give £5. http://t.co/Urt3n8y6WE. Nominate @Misskeeleyhawes @EmWatson @josierourke pic.twitter.com/30a8RykcW9

As gorgeous as Naomi Campbell’s:

As hilarious as Hugh Grant’s:

Of course, you don't have to wait to be tagged to help Unicef’s Syria Children’s Emergency. Visit Unicef.org for more information and to donate.
