Chris Martin Opens Up About Why He and Gwyneth Paltrow Split

Chris Martin Opens Up About Why He and Gwyneth Paltrow Split

The Grammy winner talks about vulnerability and love

We've all heard about conscious uncoupling—the term that Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin used to describe their separation after 11 years of marriage. Now, one month later, Martin is opening up about what really happened near the end of their marriage, and why they came to the decision to part rather than to continue trying to reconcile.

In an interview with BBC Radio, the Coldplay frontman said, "This was more a realization about trying to grow up basically... if you can't open yourself up, you can't appreciate the wonder inside. So you can be with someone very wonderful, but because of your own issues you cannot let that be celebrated in the right way."

That type of self-awareness has become the hallmark of the couple's unconventional split, and the reason that Martin and Paltrow—who have two children together—have been able to remain friends after their separation. Martin also said he channeled the break-up as inspiration for Coldplay's latest studio album, Ghost Stories, which will be released in May.

"I think everyone in their life goes through challenges, whether it's love or money, kids or illness," he says. "You have to really not run away from that stuff." Considering that new research shows that marital stress is directly tied to depression, it appears that confronting your issues head-on, like Martin and Paltrow did, even when it results in an uncoupling, might in fact be the healthiest option for some couples. We wish them both the best.
