Even though getting catcalled is a regular part of life for many women, that doesn't mean it's harmless—so a 28-year-old in Minneapolis decided to do something to combat unsolicited remarks.
Lindsey, who prefers to go by just her first name, created Cards Against Harassment. The site is full of amusing, on-point notecards women can download, print out, then hand to men who are harassing them on the street. The cards explain why catcalling is offensive, and most of them end by explaining the movement’s central theme: "It's not a compliment, it's harassment." The idea is pretty brilliant; it's easy to feel tongue-tied in the moment when someone harasses you, so having a card that does all of the hard work for you can be immensely helpful. Here are a couple of the cards:
Lindsey didn't stop with the cards, though; she took her awareness-raising efforts to another level and started approaching men who catcalled her, asking them about their motivations and filming their responses. Some men responded with misguided statements like, "You don't think women get dolled up every day to look good?" Others had just plain disgusting comments, like, "I can smell your womanhood because I'm a wolf." Watch one of the videos for yourself:
Kudos to Lindsey for speaking out against catcalling. No matter how hard we work out or how good a summer sundress looks on us, we should all be free to walk down the street without hearing unwelcome comments about our bodies.
