Every week, Your New Favorite Playlist introduces you to workout-worthy tunes from a different fitness brand. This week, The Pursuit by Equinox shares one of its recent playlists.
Ever notice how it's somehow easier to eek out that extra burst of strength or speed if you're competing against someone else? Some fitness classes put that concept to work with leaderboards or other strategies designed to bring out your competitive side, but The Pursuit by Equinox (a chain of high-end gyms) takes the concept to a whole new level: "It's Equinox's immersive, highly competitive cycling class that uses real-time rider data to visualize performance through dynamic graphics and challenges," says Jeffrey Scott, an instructor for the class.
Here's how it works: The room is set up like any other indoor-cycling class, but there's a screen behind the instructor. Throughout the 45-minute session, you go through a series of games—some individual and some team-oriented—that help motivate you to give it your absolute all. When we tried the class, one game involved trying to get your individual circle from the bottom to the top of the screen as fast as you could; another game split the class up into three groups and illustrated each team's total distance on a race track.
"Music is so important to the overall energy of the class," says Scott. "Music, along with the projected metrics and gaming elements, engages and motivates riders to reach their peak performance." The Pursuit has two high-energy classes: Build, which is designed to improve endurance and increase strength, and Burn, which uses high-intensity interval training to increase the number of calories you torch. Try the playlist below from a recent Build class for long-distance running, hill climbing, dancing, or of course, your own cycling session.
