The Number of Calories in a Cronut

The Number of Calories in a Cronut

We crunched the numbers ourselves—and the stats are downright shocking.

After more than a year of keeping his famous recipe under lock and key, cronut inventor Dominique Ansel just shared an At-Home Cronut recipe with ABC News to promote his new cookbook, Dominique Ansel: The Secret Recipes. The recipe calls for 26 tablespoons of butter and requires three days of prep work—but what we were really interested in were the nutrition stats behind the donut-croissant hybrid that took the foodie world by storm. So we used nutrition software to crunch the numbers on the recipe—and found that each cronut comes in at an estimated 1,300 calories, 103 grams of fat (39 of which are saturated), and 46 grams of sugar. Here's what the nutrition label would look like:

Granted, there are caveats: For starters, this is a slightly different recipe than what Ansel uses in his bakery (it's standard for chefs to scale down and adapt their recipes for home cooks when writing cookbooks). Nutrition analysis software also can't accommodate instances in which you might have some frying oil left over (we tried to compensate for this by estimating what we thought the minimum amount of oil absorbed would probably be). And the recipe says it makes "over eight" cronuts—so we made our calculations based on the assumption that this recipe probably results in about nine cronuts.

Even as a rough estimate, these numbers are pretty sobering. Yes, cronuts are rare indulgences—but at the end of the day, there are better ways to treat yourself. Check out these healthier dessert ideas for some inspiration:
