Millennials are crazy about it, and they spend most of their time in bed doing it. No, it’s not a hot new sexual position, if that’s what you’re thinking. It’s…texting.
When they’re in bed, 82 percent of people between 18 and 33 (also known as the Millennial generation) spend more time sending and receiving text messages than they do having sex, according to a new survey of 1,500 consumers by Apartment Therapy (we see what you did there, everyone’s-favorite-home-DIY-décor website!). The survey also revealed a bit of a generational divide in non-sexual in-bed leisure activities, with 81 percent of Generation Xers and 83 percent of Baby Boomers reporting that they spend more time in bed reading than sexing.
The good news is that all that texting (and reading) doesn’t seem to be having a negative impact on anyone’s sex lives. 81 percent of the Millennial-aged survey-takers still reported having sex at least once a week. 75 percent of Gen-Xers and 61 percent of Baby Boomers reported the same. That’s a relief!
Choosing reading and texting over getting naked and sweaty—the news makes for good headlines, but we can’t say we’re shocked by it. If you think about it, most people don’t go straight to sleep as soon as they tuck in. Just because people are logging more hours catching up with friends or making headway on a great novel doesn’t mean that they aren’t still having sex, as those once-a-week sex numbers show. They’re just not getting it on every night for hours at a go. (And seriously—who’s got time for that?)
