Another day, another celebrity touting what they say is the new superfood. The latest evidence of the trend? Vanessa Lachey took to her Instagram feed earlier this week to share what she's been loading up on during her pregnancy. Take a look:

There are lots of claims about the health benefits of coconut oil floating around, from improved immunity and thyroid function to protective benefits against obesity and cancer. But are they true? Unforutnately, they haven't been proven by research, says Keri Gans, M.S., R.D., author of The Small Change Diet. Gans says she has no major issues with most moms-to-be drinking coconut oil if they enjoy it—but that its not going to confer any magical health benefits on them.

"The one caveat is if she's already at risk for being overweight because that can lead to issues like gestational diabetes," says Gans, who notes that coconut oil is calorie-dense and high in saturated fat. "That said, a lot of what's out there right now about coconut oil is hearsay and hype."
Gans says she'd be more likely to recommend a different go-to drink for moms: milk. "Pregnant women need calcium and vitamin D and minimal saturated fat," she says. "I'd also recommend lots of fruits, veggies, and whole grains."
