We never thought we'd say this, but having a TV in your bedroom may be good for your sex life—at least, according to a new survey conducted by British company VoucherCodesPro and reported on in the Daily Mail.
For the survey, 2,431 Brits were asked if they had televisions in their bedrooms (74 percent said yes). All of the participants were then asked how often they had sex per week. As it turns out, the people who had TVs in their bedrooms said they have sex about twice a week—while those without one claimed to have sex once a week. The participants with televisions in their bedrooms were then asked if they felt the presence of the TV helped their sex lives—and 67 percent said they thought it did!
Why? A little more than a third of participants with TVs in their bedrooms said it was because they could watch porn with their partners—while 32 percent said it let them have sex without missing their favorite TV shows (what…?!). Many participants with TVs also said that watching shows with their S.O. brought them closer together. (OK, that makes a certain amount of sense.)
While these findings are pretty surprising, it's important to note that they were self-reported—so it could be that people who have TVs in their bedrooms are just more likely to say they have more sex. After all, televisions do have their drawbacks: "Many couples with televisions in their bedroom use it as a distraction from connecting and to avoid intimacy, which can be thwarting to your sex life," says Emily Morse, Ph.D., a sex and relationship expert and co-founder of Emily & Tony. However, she does acknowledge that it depends on the couple. "If couples are setting 'date nights' around their favorite TV shows or watching erotic movies together and this inspires them to cuddle and have sex, the benefits for this type of situation are clear."
So if watching TV is something that gets you and your partner in bed together, possibly leading to intimacy, Morse says go for it. Whatever works, right?
That being said, there are other things to consider before you run out and buy a brand-new flatscreen for the bedroom—one of which is sleep. If you're a sensitive sleeper, having a TV in the bedroom can negatively impact your shuteye. In that case, we suggest skipping the TV and checking out these six moves for better sex instead.
