Wondering Which Food Is Healthier? Google Has a Tool for That

Wondering Which Food Is Healthier? Google Has a Tool for That

Your smartphone holds instantaneous answers.

Ever wondered whether you should buy navel oranges or tangerines? Or brown rice or quinoa? Last year, Google rolled out a handy tool that let you ask nutrition-based questions like "How much calcium is in a navel orange?" and "How much protein is in quinoa?" Now, though, the feature has ventured into food fight territory: When you input two items, you can instantly compare their key nutrients—we're talking calories, fat, calcium, iron, and more.

Here's how it works: If you're at a computer, you just type "compare spinach and kale" (or whatever two foods you want to learn more about) into Google, and the side-by-side analysis automatically shows up at the top of the results. If you're on-the-go and you have an iPhone or an Android phone, you can pull up the Google Search app and either say or type out the two foods you want to pit against each other. The possibilities are endless; we've been curious about spinach compared to kale, so that's what we asked. (Note: Saying or typing "spinach versus kale" works, too.) Within seconds, a comparison of their nutritional info popped up. Turns out, kale has more than double the calories per serving but almost two and a half more grams of protein, too.

Yep, it's that easy—meaning this tool is perfect for choosing ingredients at the grocery store, deciding on a side at a restaurant, or quickly settling food-related squabbles among friends. Get started by downloading Google Search on your phone (the app is a little different than searching on a Web browser—you can use voice search!). Craving more healthy-eating knowledge?
