Maybe Einstein played guitar. Musicians have sharper minds than those who have never touched an instrument, says new research from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.
People with ranging levels of musical training took two mental tests while their brains were monitored by an EEG recording. The more practice hours a participant had racked up, the quicker and more accurate his answers. Plus, musicians were better at noticing and correcting their mistakes than those without any training.
One reason why: Musicians learn to adjust quickly and not let errors mess up their performance during concerts, says study author Ines Jentzsch, Ph.D.
The researchers also found a link between music-making and increased activity in the front part of the brain, an area that normally slows with age. This suggests that picking up an instrument could actually slow or prevent mental decline, Jentzsch says.
No music experience? No problem! You don’t have to be Mozart for your brain to benefit—and it’s never too late to learn, according to a recent study from the U.K.
