Maybe you should hire your son as a personal trainer. Youngsters have a better fitness philosophy than adults, finds a recent Canadian study.
Researchers found teens are more likely to focus on the mental and physical benefits of exercise, while older generations tend to view it as a necessary evil for fat loss.
As you age, fun tends to drop out of the exercise equation, says the study’s lead author, James Gavin, Ph.D. “Kids, on the other hand, wouldn’t do things like play soccer, skateboard, or ride their bikes if it wasn’t fun.” Why that matters: When you’re motivated by something outside of just the physical benefits, you’re more likely to enjoy yourself—and adhere to an active lifestyle, says Gavin.
Bring back your inner kid by switching things up in the gym. When study participants at the University of Florida were split into three groups—one that varied its workouts, one that did the same thing every time, and one with no regulations—those who experimented enjoyed exercising 20 percent more than everyone else.
