Break a sweat for your swimmers’ sake. An hour a day of exercise can significantly boost your sperm count, finds new research from Harvard University.
In the study, men who stuck to 7 hours of moderate to vigorous exercise per week strengthened their sperm 43 percent more than guys who only worked out one hour or less a week.
Regular exercise may boost antioxidant enzymes throughout your body and protect against reactive oxygen species that can damage sperm cells, explains study author Audrey Gaskins. Breaking a sweat could also increase testosterone levels and insulin sensitivity, which both aid in sperm production.
Just don’t bank on the bike to boost your count: In the study, cycling was the only physical activity that lowered sperm levels. Guys who spent 90 minutes a week or more on the saddle had 34 percent less sperm than those who didn’t ride. Previous research suggests biking hurts your junk because it causes a reduction in blood flow to the testes, and thus, less hormone production.
