The Best Donation You Can Make

The Best Donation You Can Make

When your cube-mate comes calling for contributions to his charity race, chip in: Being generous perks you up, but you get the biggest happiness bump when you donate directly to someone you know, says new Canadian research.

In addition to bringing a mood boost, previous studies have found lending a hand can lower your blood pressure and extend your life. But in this study, researchers looked at when the emotional benefits of charitable behavior are strongest. The results: You feel best when you help out a friend, versus sending an anonymous donation to a charity.

“Humans are super-social beings, so giving is especially rewarding when it allows us to strengthen ties with people and causes we care about,” says lead researcher Lara B. Aknin, Ph.D., of Simon Fraser University.

Of course, any kind of cause that helps others is worthy of your time and money. Can’t find a friend to support? Consider pitching in to one of our favorite charities for kids.
