It could be time to unfriend Facebook. Though the site keeps you virtually connected, Zuckerberg’s baby may bum you out, according to a new study from the University of Michigan.
After tracking people’s online habits for 2 weeks, researchers found the more time people used Facebook, the more their short-term happiness and overall life satisfaction levels decreased. On the other hand, direct social activity—like having a real-life conversation!—raised well-being.
Why? Looking at photos and travel updates could make you think your friends are happier than you, leading you to overestimate your loneliness, the researchers say.
Glued to your screen all day? Facebook says the average user spends about 8 hours a month on the site. Try to stay under the average, and instead of looking at photos of your cousin’s best friend’s baby, spend that time updating your own status—it could make you feel less lonely and more connected to friends, a University of Arizona study found.
