Comfort food without the calories! Drawing your favorite fatty, sugary foods could boost your mood, according to new St. Bonaventure University research.
In fact, drawing pizzas improved participants’ mood by 28 percent; cupcakes, 27 percent; and strawberries, 22 percent. (Veggie sketches had no effect.)
Simply painting comfort foods stimulates the brain’s reward response, says study coauthor Gregory J. Privitera, Ph.D. But let’s be real: Stopping to draw a plate of loaded nachos isn’t as practical as, well, eating them. The good news: Looking at pictures of food (hello, Instagram feed) or simply imagining them could bring about the same good mood effect. Plus, you’ll skip the inevitable carb crash that comes with indulging in junk food.
If the trick is too quirky for you, eat more of the right stuff next time you’re down in the dumps. People who fill up on fruits and veggies are more positive and energetic, according to New Zealand researchers.
