Lots to celebrate? You may start to inflate. People down more calories when they’re happy than when they’re sad, finds new research from the Netherlands.
In the study, people consumed nearly 100 calories more of a milkshake when watching a happy movie compared to a sad film. What’s more, “emotional” eaters consumed nearly twice as much when jovial than when they were bummed.
Although previous research links negative emotions and overeating, study author Peggy Bongers says the findings make sense. “When we have something to celebrate, food is often involved. This learned association between good times and eating may cause people to overeat.”
One strategy: Think ahead. When you’re watching a funny TV show or movie, portion out a serving or two rather than munching straight from the bag—which can cause you to go overboard fast.
