So there isn’t an app that will make pizza magically calorie-free—or a laser that will help you sculpt abs while eat cupcakes. But there are several gadgets designed to support your slimming. We’re not going to say they do the work for you, but they could be worth a try. Check them out—and then let us know if you'd try each one.
HydraCoach Intelligent Water Bottle
$29.99, sportline.com
This "smart" bottle that encourages hydration with a display that shows your daily fluid consumption. (While water doesn't actually make you lose weight, staying hydrated can help you avoid mistaking thirst for hunger.) The idea is that HydraCoach will spur you to hit your daily quota of eight eight-ounce glasses—or exceed it.
Lumo Lift
$99.99, lumobodytech.com
Attaching this "pin" to your clothing is supposed to help straighten your posture. The device tracks your stand-straight habits (which can be reviewed with the corresponding app) and also offers a PowerUp option—a mode that causes the device to vibrate when you hunch or slouch. Correcting your posture may not actually help you slim down, but it can make you appear slimmer.
Prep Pad from The Orange Chef
$149.95, theorangechef.com
Life would be easier if you could just look at meal and know how many calories were in it, right? Prep Pad poises itself as the next best thing: The scale measures the calorie count for you—and also tells you (via your iPhone or iPad) how many grams of carbs, fat, and protein are in your foods. Granted, it's unclear how accurate the scale's measurements are.
HAPIfork
$99, hapi.com
This utensil vibrates if you're eating too quickly to remind you to slow down (since studies show that eating too quickly could lead to weight gain). What's too quickly? Anything more than one bite per 10 seconds. A corresponding app also records data such as the number of "fork servings," the amount of time between each, and how long it took you to eat your entire meal. The only problem? Unless you buy a bunch of these, you have to eat with the same fork at every meal…and what happens when you delve into the world of finger-foods?
The Kitchen Safe
$49, thekitchensafe.com
The Kitchen Safe is a container that locks, without an override, to stow your treats from one minute to 10 days—so you don't immediately inhale a bag of chips after you take it home from the store. This seems like it could work if you take out one portion of a food, then immediately lock the rest back up before you polish off your serving. Otherwise, what's to stop you from eating the entire contents of the safe once it's unlocked?
