First, Matthew McConaughey put a ring on it. Then, Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine followed suit. But when George Clooney said I do to Amal Alamuddin in September, it became official: This year marked the end of the perma-Hollywood player. It begs the question: After being happily single for so long, why did these guys finally decide to settle down? Jenn Berman, a licensed therapist practicing in Beverly Hills, discusses what made Tinseltown's hottest commitment-phobes tie the knot.
George Clooney
The actor was known for his revolving door after his divorce from Talia Balsam in 1993. He dated a variety of women, committing to Stacy Keibler for a couple of years before meeting Amal Alamuddin—a lawyer with a B.A. from Oxford University and a J.D. from New York University. Berman says George was likely impressed by Amal's smarts and successes. “This is a woman, a partner, who probably challenges him," she says.
Adam Levine
Berman says that tying the knot is about timing in 50 percent of cases for men—and that this was most likely the case for Adam when he proposed to model Behati Prinsloo. “Our needs change as we grow up,” says Berman, who suggests that Adam was probably tired of doing the no-strings-attached thing.
Matthew McConaughey
For its November 2014 issue, GQ asked Matthew why—after being with Camila Alves for years and already having children with her—he decided to tie the knot with her. His answer? "I had to get to the point where I saw it as more than just the thing to do. I wanted to really want to." Berman explains: "Priorities change as men mature, as they become fathers. It can make them want to provide a more stable environment for their children, as well as for themselves."
