You’ve probably got the whole DIY dyed hair thing on lock when it comes to the strands that top your head (and if not, here’s how to do it!). But would you experiment with dyeing the other hair on your body—specifically, the kind that resides under your arms? It may sound out-there, but women dyeing their armpit hair is actually trending on social media right now.
The Instagram account @LadyPitHair features women going against social beauty norms and growing out their armpit hair to lengths that may have previously sent them in search of a razor. Scrolling through the collage of unconventional grooming practices is an interesting exercise in itself; so many different types of women are getting in on the hairy action! To make it even more fun, some are actually taking to their pits with hair dye to make a bold statement. Their goal? “Smashing the patriarchy,” says Taylor Carpenter, a 23-year-old whose hot pink pits are featured on the Instagram page.

“Today’s beauty standards really bum me out as they constantly police women’s bodies," says Taylor. "I want to be a part of a movement where people do what they want with their bodies." Apart from the serious weight that comes with trying to change how people perceive women’s bodies, she has another solid reason for changing up the color of her body hair: “Honestly, I really like how they look. When I catch a glance of my hot pink pits, it makes me smile."
Even though this type of daring move flies in the face of a lot of beauty rules, Taylor has received largely positive reactions (a coworker even suggested she take it up a notch and add some glitter to the party!). Even though she has gotten some negative comments on her Instagram posts like “have fun being single! :),” she’s not bothered. “I grew them out for me and dyed them for me. It doesn’t matter if people don’t like them because I do."
Want to follow in these ladies’ footsteps? Follow Taylor’s step-by-step pit-dying instructions below:
1. Apply bleach to the armpit hair with a professional brush applicator with the help of a friend or on your own. Taylor’s friend, who’s in cosmetology school, chose a volume 40 bleach for Taylor’s medium-brown hair to get a white-blonde shade. “She chose it because she’s very experienced with color, but something like a volume 10 would probably work with lighter hair than mine,” says Taylor.
2. Leave it on for about 20 minutes. Taylor’s hair is easily bleached, so yours may take slightly less or more time, depending on how light or dark the hair is.
3. Rinse the bleach well, and dry the hair.
4. Apply a dye (Taylor loves Manic Panic Hot Hot Pink) with a professional brush applicator, and leave it on for 30 minutes to achieve intense color.
5. When it’s time for touchups, use gloves, and put a tiny amount of dye between your index finger and thumb. Apply about a centimeter from where the hair starts growing so as not to color your skin.
Full disclosure: Taylor did stain her shirt the first day she dyed her armpits—but it washed out. Since then, she hasn’t noticed sweating off the color or staining any other items in her wardrobe. “The dye does wear off easier than it would on your head since you wash your hair less if it’s dyed, but you definitely can’t do that with armpits,” says Taylor.
If you decide to board the tinted pits train, don’t be shy about tagging @LadyPitHair to get your look some attention! And if you’re on the fence, consider one of the benefits Taylor has found after dyeing hers: “Pink is pretty much my favorite color, and now it’s like I’m wearing pink every day.” It’s basically like every day is Wednesday in a body-positive version of Mean Girls.
