The Fabulous 'Do Women with All Hair Types Can WERK

The Fabulous 'Do Women with All Hair Types Can WERK

Steal this of-the-moment style to induce major hair envy.

The lob, or long bob, has recently given way to another trendy style: the wob, or wavy bob. From Jennifer Lawrence, who was transitioning from a bob, to Alexa Chung, who just wanted to change things up, the cut is everywhere—and it's crazy versatile. We caught up with celebrity hairstylist and Alterna Haircare vice president of Global Creative Ric Pipino on how to recreate the look on every hair texture.

If You Have Straight Hair…
Use a volume spray, like Alterna Bamboo Volume 48-Hour Sustainable Volume Spray ($25, sephora.com), or even your go-to dry shampoo to add texture and lift to the roots. "Blow-dry as much of the root as you can, using a round or flat brush," says Pipino. Then, use rollers or a curling iron to add waves. Because you're trying to get a wave—not a curl—the sections can be larger (around an inch). It also helps to alternate the direction of each curl.

If You Have Wavy Hair…
Frizz isn't an issue for you? "You can work with the curl, even swirl it around your fingers and then pin it up," says Pipino. However, if your hair is prone to 'fro-ing out, Pipino recommends applying an anti-frizz curl-defining cream—we love Living Proof No Frizz Nourishing Styling Cream ($36, sephora.com)—and then using a round brush to smooth it out. Once you have a clean slate, you can add texture back into the hair (see the straight hair section above for tips on how to do this).

If You Have Curly Hair…
You'll want to smooth curls out completely to create a solid base for any texture you add in—otherwise, your hair will spring right back to its naturally curly state. After smoothing with a brush, pull sections up into pin curls and then add hold with a blow-dryer. "Dry the hair over your hand, not on the hair," says Pipino. Otherwise, the hair will get too dry. Release for soft waves.
