The 4 Cardinal Rules of Re-Gifting

The 4 Cardinal Rules of Re-Gifting

It's not tacky if you stick to these guidelines.

Regifting: Tacky or thoughtful? It's fine to spread the wealth if you're willing to come clean about the present's provenance, says etiquette expert Anna Post. Prefer to stay mum? At least make sure that...

1. The item is brand-spanking new and in its original box or packaging.

2. It's something that your receiver truly wants—e.g., a cooking lesson for your foodie friend, not a generic candle.

3. It's not monogrammed, homemade, or otherwise one-of-a-kind. (And have you peeked inside to check for hidden notes to you?)

4. You're sure—especially in the Instagram age—it won't get back to the original giver. If there might be tears or hurt feelings, it's not worth it.
