Your flight’s delayed, and you’ve got hours to kill at the airport—but it’s fast food city as far as the eye can see. Sound familiar? Feeding your body well while en route has always been a challenge, but it’s getting easier, thanks to virtuous new eateries popping up in popular terminals. That’s good news when your cravings lean more kale salad than Big Mac. Wherever you’re headed for the holidays, these options will steer you toward wellness and away from in-flight bloat.
San Francisco International Airport. SFO gets major points for offering spots that let you skip onto the plane feeling light instead of stuffed. Fill up at Napa Farms Market (in Terminal 2), featuring stations from local favorites like Cowgirl Creamery, Equator Coffee and Tyler Florence Rotisserie. Afterward, you can sun-salute away stress in the terminal’s yoga rooms (mats are included).
Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. Get a coffee at Chesapeake Bay Roasting Company in Concourse D, a regional java roaster dedicated to sustainability. The company pledges 2 percent of sales toward environmental efforts to preserve the nearby Chesapeake Bay.
LaGuardia International Airport, New York City. If you’ve got time to kill at this oft-delayed airstrip, hit up Bisoux (Terminal D) or Victory Grill (Terminal C), two of the 10 LGA restaurants managed by OTG, a food and beverage operator with an eye to health. Concept chef Michael Coury makes twice-weekly trips to New York City’s Union Square Greenmarket to source local produce.
Los Angeles International Airport. Drop by the new LAX outpost of famed LA eatery Real Food Daily (Terminal 4) for a taste of its trademark organic, vegan cuisine. You can design your own hot bowls with quinoa, brown rice or tempeh, or snag a grab-and-go organic salad.
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Looking for a slice—but not the extra-doughy chain variety? Head to La Grande Orange Pizzeria in Terminal 4. Chefs make crust from live fermented sourdough (gluten-free is also available) and offer tons of vegetarian and vegan toppings.
George Bush Intercontinental Airport, Houston. Cat Cora’s Kitche n (Terminal E) serves Mediterranean-inspired cuisine from the former “Iron Chef.” Expect innovative tapas, such as salt roasted beets, made from organic and local foods.
