Why Do Men Produce Different Amounts of Semen?

Why Do Men Produce Different Amounts of Semen?

Reddit asked, we answered.

Have an embarrassing sex question? Chances are someone else has already asked it on Reddit (or hey, maybe that was you!). Known as "the front page of the internet," Reddit is where Web-savvy people crowdsource answers to pretty much any question…like this one. Feel free to check out what other commenters had to say, but we went straight to an expert to get the facts. Check it out, below:

The question: Does the amount of semen produced during an orgasm have any correlation with anything—i.e., how good it felt, time since last orgasm, etc.?

The expert: Michael Ingber, M.D., urologist at The Center for Specialized Women's Health in Denville, New Jersey, and assistant clinical professor of urology at Weill Cornell Medical College

The answer: Okay, so here's the deal: The amount of semen your guy produces has nothing to do with how good a time you two had between the sheets. It does, however, indicate just how much your guy has been getting off. Repeated ejaculations—whether through sex or manual stimulation—tend to result in lower volume, says Ingber.

This can be explained by where his semen comes from: the seminal vesicles and the prostate. "Rhythmic contractions of the pelvic floor muscles in the male, along with the bulbocavernosus muscle at the base of the penis, propel the semen out," says Ingber. After an initial ejaculation, there is physically less volume in these organs, along with less intense contractions of the pelvic floor.

That said, the volume of semen a guy produces can also vary from guy to guy. "Typical semen volume ranges from 1.5 mL to 6.0 mL," says Ingber, which translates to about a third of a teaspoon to a little over a teaspoon. It's also important to note that the amount of semen he produces doesn't mean he's more or less fertile.

So if it's been awhile since he last came, he's probably going to release a lot more semen when he orgasms. However, the amount of semen he produces has little to do with the potency of his swimmers or how awesome the sex was for him.
