If you've ever worn yoga pants in public and encountered a whistle, marriage proposal, or some variation of "nice ass" on your way to the gym, then you know that street harassment is a very real problem. If you're lucky and have never experienced it, this video capturing street harassers at their finest reveals just how creepy their unwanted attention can be.
In the video, which was filmed for 10 hours in all areas of Manhattan, a woman named Shoshana Roberts walks through the streets wearing jeans and a crew neck while a hidden camera captures over 100 instances of verbal harassment. Throughout the video, comments range from an enthusiastic "Nice!" to "You don't want to talk because I'm ugly?" But one guy makes things even more uncomfortable by walking beside the woman for five minutes without saying a word. Um, creepy. Check out the video, created by the non-profit Hollaback! and Rob Bliss Creative, below to see for yourself:
Even though it’s a little unnerving to see just how big of an issue street harassment is, we're glad the video is taking over the Internet. As of press time, it had more than six million views on YouTube (and it was just posted yesterday!). We hope that it helps publicize how creepy unwanted comments are and encourage others to take a stand against it. Find out what this woman is doing to stand up to catcalling strangers and how you can help.
