This is Why a Record Number of Americans are Still Single

And it’s not because they don’t want to tie the knot

It's been a pretty good month for people flying solo. First, an economist found data that revealed single adults now outnumber married adults in the U.S. And now, it looks like the number of never-married adults over age 25 is at an all-time high, according to new statistics released by Pew Research Social Trends. But it's not because we're all shunning marriage. In fact, 55 percent of never-married men and 50 percent of never-married women still want to tie the knot someday.

As with most people who are currently flying solo but would like to eventually partner up for life, it’s not for lack of trying or desire to meet someone. A closer look at these singles found that among those who haven’t been married but would like to be, both men and women are staying single for the same reasons. Thirty percent said they haven’t found someone who has what they’re looking for in a partner, 27 percent said they aren’t financially prepared for marriage, and 22 percent said they’re too young or not yet ready to settle down.

These are definitely legitimate reasons to be single: It can be really hard to meet someone you're truly compatible with, and money is a very important factor when it comes to marriage. In fact, financial compatibility is one of the best predictors of relationship happiness, so if your career and bank account aren’t where you wish they were, it’s reasonable to put off planning a wedding until you feel more stable. For the other group of singles who are too young or aren’t ready, those are red flags for any serious relationship, too, so kudos for knowing when you still have more personal growth to do before jumping into a major commitment.

Some cities may be better for single folks than others, but no matter where you’re located, there are a ton of options for meeting someone new.
