While the nights get cooler and the leaves transition to crisper hues, our makeup palette also tends to change with the season. The simplest (and cheapest) swap without having to overhaul your entire stash is to add a new lipstick. Retire your bright reds and pops of pink for darker shades, like berry or burgundy. The colors are the perfect contrast against, let’s be honest, less-than-sun kissed skin. The one downside, however, is that the darker hues have the tendency to come off more goth than chic. Butter London global color ambassador Katie Jane Hughes walked us through simple tricks to get that perfect balance of boldness and wearability.
Wear the Right Shade
While there are obviously some shades that flatter one skin tone more than others, Hughes recommends a cool berry hue, like Butter London’s Lippy Moisture Matte Lipstick in Ruby Murray ($22, butterlondon.com), that's flattering on everyone. “The fact that it’s buildable also makes it versatile, as you can wear it sheer or full pigment,” she says.

Apply Lightly
It is possible to go dark without going bold. “Apply as a stain, and build,” says Hughes. “Dab the lipstick onto the lips using your ring finger, and slowly build the color.” Make the application even easier with a lip crayon, such as Burt's Bees Lip Crayon in Redwood Forest ($8, burtsbees.com), which goes on sheer on the first swipe.
Mix It Up
Tone down a super-dark color on your first wear so it doesn't feel so overwhelming. “Try mixing in a dab of pink or bright red to lift the darker color.”

Keep it Warm
The number one trick to making a dark lipstick look more chic than gothic is in the complexion. “Keep the complexion warm, not too cool or pale," says Hughes. "The warmth of the skin will make the bold lip more wearable.”
Finish the Look Right
The key to a warm complexion is with the right makeup palette. “Keep makeup creamy and soft with nice separated lashes and a little pink cheek," says Hughes "It’s subtle, but it’s the difference between doing nothing and looking a bit goth.”
