How to Find Out If Your Seafood is Toxic

How to Find Out If Your Seafood is Toxic

Read this before your next sushi date.

At this point, it’s safe to say that you know you should be buying sustainable seafood that’s lower in mercury and higher in omega-3's. But just because you're a conscious consumer and know you should be looking out for these things doesn’t mean you really know how to—until now. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) recently published a new Seafood Calculator to help you buy seafood that’s lower in mercury, higher in omega-3 fatty acids, and sustainably produced. The info in the calculator contains more details than the info that’s available from the FDA and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Here’s how the calculator works: All you have to do is access the tool and then supply the required info (age, weight, and gender, as well as if you’re pregnant or have heart disease). Then, once you provide that info, they give you an entire chart of recommendations based on a four-ounce serving sizes of more than 80 different species of seafood. The chart is split up into five categories: the EWG’s "best bets" (fish that are very high in omega-3's, low in mercury, and sustainable); "good choices" (high in omega-3's and low in mercury); "low mercury" (but also low in omega-3's); "mercury risks add up" (pregnant women and children should limit or avoid); and "avoid" (mercury levels too high to eat regularly).  The t ool also lists the best fish within each category, how sustainable each pick is, how much mercury it contains, and how many times a week it’s okay to eat it. Pretty cool, right?

And here’s the other nice part: While the calculator is only accessible online for now, it’s going to be part of an app at some point this fall.
