There have been plenty of studies over the years that show wine comes with a solid set of health benefits, from decreasing your risk of stroke to helping men produce better sperm. But the hits just keep coming: Vino might help stop acne, according to new research published in the Journal of Dermatology and Therapy.

For the study, researchers tested whether resveratrol, the primary antioxidant found in red wine, could be an effective treatment for acne. The thinking was that since resveratrol has antimicrobial properties, it might help fight the bacteria associated with breakouts.
Researchers incubated samples of Propionibacterium acnes, the bacterium linked to acne, along with small amounts of resveratrol and benzoyl peroxide. (Benzoyl peroxide sounds familiar because it’s a key ingredient in many acne-fighting face washes.) They found that the resveratrol kept the acne bacteria from growing in the long term, while the benzoyl peroxide killed the cells in the short term. Therefore, they concluded, the combination of the two shows the most promise for acne treatment.

It’s now up to the beauty and skin companies to try this combo out—will it be wine facials? Merlot zit cream? Granted, this doesn't necessarily mean that drinking wine will help clear up your skin—but if you want to sip on a glass tonight just in case, by all means.
