You can do a lot in 10 hours. You can fly to Paris, have a pretty epic night’s sleep, or watch the entire first season of Orange Is the New Black. Or you can play on your phone: Young women spend an average of 10 hours a day on their cell phones, according to a new survey published in the Journal of Behavioral Addictions.
For the online survey, researchers at Baylor University polled 164 college students on their cellphone habits. They found that the women spent 10 hours on their phones per day, men spent eight, and 60 percent of the whole lot admitted to being addicted to their devices (getting agitated when their phones weren’t in sight, etc).
So how are their thumbs passing the time? Respondents reported spending the most time texting (94.6 minutes a day), followed by e-mailing (48.5 minutes), Facebook-ing (38.6 minutes), browsing the net (34.4 minutes) and listening to music (26.9 minutes). And—get this—researchers found that Pinterest and Instagram are among the most addictive activities. (Check out these three signs you’re addicted to Instagram.)
While our dependence on smartphones isn’t exactly news (one previous survey found that one in five people have checked their phones during sex!) the sheer amount of hours we spend on our phones is pretty shocking. A quick swipe here, a message there—it really adds up!
Problem is, all of that phoning can take a serious toll on our relationships, happiness, and health. In fact, people who spend the most time on their phones tend to be less fit than those who use their phones less, per a recent study in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity.
