You might not have to wait for a guy to confess his feelings to get verbal confirmation that he's into you. According to a new study published in the journal Evolution and Human Behavior, guys vary their vocal pitch, shifting between both high and low tones of voice, when talking to a woman they find attractive.
In the study, researchers examined the pitch patterns of 110 English and Czech speakers while they chatted with different people. When a guy who spoke either language was talking to a woman he found attractive, he naturally varied his tone from deeper to higher pitches, in a subtle sing-song way. Plus, their minimal pitch was lower when speaking with someone they were interested in.

The reasoning? Researchers suggest vocal modulating might be a key component in courtship—especially since they noted it in two totally different languages. By varying their pitch, guys can signal that they are both masculine and sensitive to potential mates; their tone conveys manliness, but also the softness associated with being a good partner and supporter.
And, interestingly, this method seems to work. When the researchers played the tapes back to listeners, women were more attracted to the men speaking in the varied tone men used on the women they found most appealing.

So while this obviously isn't foolproof, it could be worth noting on your next date. If a guy shifts between a deep, manly tenor and a softer, sweeter tone, he might be trying to show off all his good qualities.
