3 Tips on How to Take a Topless Selfie (That Won’t Upset Your Grandma)

3 Tips on How to Take a Topless Selfie (That Won’t Upset Your Grandma)

The #ToplessTour girls share their tricks.

Chances are, you’ve already mastered the art of #tbt and #FitnessFriday. But there’s a new Instagram trend you might want to get in on: topless selfies. It all started in December 2012, when three friends from Europe (Olivia Edginton, 20, Lydia Buckler, 21, and Ingvild Marstein Olsen, 20) went for a long hike around a huge lake in Olsen’s hometown of Brumunddal, Norway. Although it was so cold the lake was nearly frozen, Olsen and her friends dared each other to strip from the waist up and snap a picture of their bare backs while their clothes hung from a nearby tree.

On their drive home, one of the women came up with the name The Topless Tour and created an Instagram account featuring their photos—and the #ToplessTour movement was born. “It felt so natural and so free,” says Edginton. Now, the account has more than 20,000 followers.

So what does it take to make topless selfie magic—without flashing random strangers? We asked the Topless Tour experts to share their tips:

Select a Setting with Some Privacy
While the Topless Tour founders have taken photos in lots of public places, you’ll probably want to start out with a location that’s a little more sheltered. Opt for someplace fairly isolated, or return to a more crowded spot you like at a time when there will be fewer people around. And since you probably won’t want to ask a random stranger to snap the photo for you (although the Topless Tour ladies have definitely done that before!), you’ll have to master the art of the timed photo: Prop your phone or camera on a rock, tree, or pile of clothes. Make sure that the camera is far enough away that you can see the background (not just your backs), and set the self-timer for more than 15 seconds so you have enough time to strip down and strike a pose.

Choose a Unique Backdrop
One glance at The Topless Tour’s Instagram page shows tons of gorgeous views of mountains and beaches, but you don’t have to be in an exotic place to find a pretty or quirky setting. Buckler says one of her favorite places she's taken a topless snapshot was actually in a barn with her friends and a bunch of cows. “If you look closely, you can see one of the cows sniffing my friend’s back.”

Beware of Cops
In some places like New York City, women can legally go topless. But if the location of your shoot isn’t so keen on nudity, the girls do have some advice for avoiding trouble: If you hear sirens, grab your clothes and run.
