Lawmakers are causing some friction in the porn industry after the California assembly passed a bill earlier this week that would require porn performers to wear condoms during filming and be tested for sexually transmitted diseased every two weeks. The law is now on its way to the senate for approval. A similar law was passed in Los Angeles, California in 2012, causing a large portion of the city's porn industry to head to Las Vegas instead.
Though legislators hope to require actors to wrap things up, the law wouldn't force filmmakers to show condoms in actual porn (though, uh, we're not sure what kind of camera angle that would require). Still, we wondered, would it really be so bad if your everyday pre-sex condom rituals were included in adult films? Porn researcher Lynn Comella Ph.D., says there's no hard data on whether condoms in porn would turn viewers off or not, but one adult film company, Wicked Pictures, has been using condoms in all of their shoots since the late '90s and their audience hasn't stopped tuning in. In fact, putting safe sex practices on display was an actual trend in porn during the late '80s to help fight the growing AIDS crisis, says Comella.

That said, it's tough to say if giving condoms a starring role in porn could make using rubbers sexier or more acceptable. But, Comella says, there is actually a whole genre of porn dedicated to sex education and safe sex practice—like condom use—that's getting viewers' engines revved. "I'm not convinced that the sight of a condom will be a magic bullet to make condoms cool, but if there was a dialogue about a pair getting hot and heavy, moving to the bedroom, and saying 'Do you have a condom?' that could work."

Though Comella is skeptical about whether a law requiring porn actors to wear condoms is necessary—and we won't know the bill's fate until the senate votes on it sometime after June 15—there is one thing she is sure of: "Viewers want porn," she says, and at the end of the day, people probably won't stop watching it just because of a condom cameo.
