Do sushi, vegetables, and green tea make up the modern-day fountain of youth? The Office for National Statistics (ONS) found that out of women living in 21 countries, Japanese women have the longest life spans, with the typical girl born in 2012 expected to make it to age 86.4, statistically speaking.
By comparison, the life expectancy for English females is 82.8 years. Though U.S. data wasn't part of the report, American women born in 2011 should be able to blow out 81 birthday candles, according to the most recent life expectancy numbers from the feds. (For men, things were a little different: Icelandic men came in first in terms of longevity at age 80.8, Japanese men were third at age 79.9, while American males, not included in the ONS report, can expect to live to age 76.)
Why do Japanese women come out on top in this regard? U.K. researchers think it may have to do with Japanese dining culture, reports the UK Independent. In other words, you might want to work more vegetables into your meal plans, find a green tea that you enjoy drinking, and indulge in lots of sushi (the oldest woman in the world, who's 116, says it's her favorite food)!.
