Tomorrow, the oldest person in the world turns 116! Wondering what's kept Misao Okawa, from Japan, going strong all these years? Her favorite food may have something to do with it: "She insists that her favorite meal is sushi, particularly mackerel on vinegar-steamed rice," Tomohito Okada, the head of the retirement home where Okawa lives, recently told the Telegraph. "She has it at least once every month."
Okawa is definitely on to something: Research suggests that the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish may help lower your risk of breast cancer and colorectal cancer, not to mention improve your odds of living longer. Okawa also credits her longevity to her habit of getting at least eight hours of sleep a night, according to the Telegraph. While the nutrients in fatty fish are great for you, they can also contain mercury. To lower your contamination risk while reaping the health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids, find out which fish you should avoid—and which you should eat instead.
