The 10 Stages of Trying to Meditate for the First Time (with GIFs!)

The 10 Stages of Trying to Meditate for the First Time (with GIFs!)

Who knew it would be so hard to sit and do nothing?

Seriously, is there anything meditation can't do? It's no secret that meditation works wonders on your mind and body, and now new research shows it can even help you at work. In a recent study published in Journal of Workplace Behavioral Health, nurses who implemented a mindfulness-based stress reduction program (a mix of mindfulness meditation, yoga, stretching, and group discussions) felt a significant decrease in employee stress and burnout.

But here's the deal: As wonderful as meditation can be, it's not as simple as just sitting down, crossing your legs, and clearing your mind. In fact, anyone who's tried meditation before probably knows that it can be weirdly, surprisingly tough. The good news is with practice, anyone can do it, and when you do it's beyond rewarding.

But before you get to that zen place… check out all of these emotions you might experience on the road to mindfulness. Can you relate?

Stage 1:
You know meditation will literally calm your mind, so you decide to sit with your emotions. All of them.

Stage 2:
You find a quiet place and try to get comfortable. Key word: Try.

Stage 3:
You realize you're stressed—like, REALLY stressed. And maybe tired, anxious, irritated, annoyed, and overwhelmed, too.

Stage 4:
You start to breathe deep, long breaths. You remember how to breathe, right?

Stage 5:
You picture yourself in a safe, calm place, and start to feel your body ease up.

Stage 6:
You also picture the mountain of laundry you have to do when you're finished…

Stage 7:
…And then immediately let that thought go.

Stage 8:
You feel invincible, ready to tackle anything!

Stage 9:
You decide to enjoy the moment of mindfulness a little bit longer instead.

Stage 10:
Just kidding. Your roommate walks in on you and wants to know why you're in full savasana-mode in the living room.

Okay, okay, so meditation can be tough. But it's not impossible, and you can totally learn—just check out these stories for tips and pointers for a smoother meditation experience:
