There's been a lot of hype about Divergent, the best-selling sci-fi trilogy of books, the first of which was made into a movie starring Shailene Woodley (it just came out March 21). In a nutshell, it's about a teenage girl named Tris (played by Shailene), who lives in a post-apocalyptic society that's divided by personality types. In this society, when you turn 16, you get inducted into one of the personality groups—but Tris doesn't feel she fits into any one mold. Thus, she is "divergent," and she sets out to take down the system.
So, what does this have to do with health—a.k.a., why are we telling you this, exactly? Because one Vulture writer, Kyle Buchanan, has a theory that the movie is actually about CrossFit—ha! And since we know that many of you are obsessed with CrossFit, we figured we'd loop you in.
Basically, Buchanan believes that the characters in Divergent are similar to those who show up regularly at CrossFit boxes. He lists several reasons, including the fact that the characters can't stop talking about their groups (he jokes that it's similar to when CrossFitters constantly post about CrossFit on Facebook) and that they are incredibly mindful of their diet (he compares Tris' bun-less hamburger to the low-carb diet that many CrossFitters prefer).
Of course, we're not saying we think that the Divergent plotline is solely based on CrossFit. However, we wouldn't be shocked if someone who was instrumental in the making of the book or film was, in fact, a CrossFitter. Surprisingly, though, Shailene didn't use CrossFit to get her body Divergent-ready—but check out which exercises the actress did do.
