Q: What's the best haircut for someone who works outdoors?

Q: What's the best haircut for someone who works outdoors?

Hi Johnny,

Thanks for writing.

Every man's haircut should suit his lifestyle, including his work. As someone who works outside, you might consider going short to help shed some of the heat. What kind of short cut, however, depends on your style.

If you're more of a utilitarian, you can go with a simple buzz cut. If this is your first time trying this style, start out using clippers with a No. 5 guard all over. Try this cordless version from Wahl ($49, amazon.com). Remember, you can always go shorter if you want, but you can't put the hair back on. If you have a rounder face, you might try a shorter setting on the sides (try a No. 3 if you're using a No. 5 on top) to make your face seem longer. These cuts also work well if you often wear a hat on the job, as they won't give you bad hat head.

If you're going for a more styled 'do, try a high-and-tight. Favored by military men and rockabillies alike, this style lets out the heat while leaving room to express yourself. Cut it short up top if you don't want to fuss with your locks in the morning or keep it long if you want something to style. If you are keeping it long on top, and you're headed out for the night, use a light pomade like this one from Cool Grease to style your hair into a part ($21, fellowbarber.com).

No matter which style you choose, it's crucial that since you spend so much time outdoors, you use an SPF to protect your skin from wrinkles, sun spots and other signs of aging--not to mention cancer. Try this time-saving moisturizer from Dove Men+Care that has an SPF built in ($7, drugstore.com). Pay special attention to your nose, neck and tops of your ears--areas that are common areas for skin cancer to pop up.

We hope this helps!
