Working construction is a tough gig. Hard hats, tool belts, and steel-toes boots can weigh you down and cramp your style. So how do real-life cousins John Colaneri and Anthony Carrino--stars of HGTV's Cousins Undercover--look so suave while upgrading homes? Like many of the projects they take on, their style is carefully tailored to their lifestyle, providing maximum comfort and utility. We went behind the scenes to find out what they can't go without while working and at home, as well as the most common home-improvement gaffes they see in the field.
Men's Health: What do you guys like to wear when you're off the set?
Anthony Carrino: I'm more on the relaxed, comfortable side--Henleys, tees, cardigans, and button-downs layered on top of one another. John is more overall stylish than I am. He really loves fashion, and you can tell by well he puts together a look.
John Colaneri: I'm more on the preppy side with button-downs, sport coats, and skinny ties. I always try to add something a little edgy in the mix, like distressed dress boots or fun outerwear. Anthony has a fashion sense that makes anything he wears look effortlessly cool.

MH: What are your go-to brands for durable, work-friendly clothing?
Carrino & Colaneri: For boots, we are both Timberland Pro guys. The styles are comfortable, safe, and durable. For apparel, Carhartt jeans and jackets seem to stand up best on job sites.

MH: What does your grooming routine look like?
Carrino: I'm a pretty low-maintenance guy. I wash my hair with Kiehl's shampoo once a week, my face with Nivea Men face scrub every night, and my body with Old Spice body wash. I trim with a Wahl trimmer once a week and use Dude No.1 Beard Oil every morning.
Colaneri: I use the June Jacobs men's line: face wash, exfoliating scrub, shaving cream, and lotion. I take two showers a da y--one at 6 a.m. and one at night when I get back from the gym. I love Old Spice Swagger body wash and deodorant. I usually shave every two days, but lately I'm growing out a beard for the cold northeast winter months.

MH: What are some easy home fixes guys mistakenly think they can't handle without help?
Carrino & Colaneri:
⢠Changing HVAC (heating, ventilating, and air conditioning) filters. I would say most people don't even know they should do this every season. It's as easy as it gets and will keep your home's air healthy and lengthen the life of the air handler.
⢠Changing a light fixture--so long as the breaker is shut off, this is safe and easy. Adding new pendants to an island or chandelier over a dining table can transform a room.
⢠Doing a backsplash in the kitchen is very easy and can be a great weekend project.
â¢Changing out cabinet hardware isn't difficult if you're using the same holes as the old hardware.
MH: How about projects guys think they can handle but really should hire a professional?
Carrino & Colaneri:
⢠Changing a light switch is as easy, but only if it's a single-pole fixture. If it's a three-way fixture (two light switches operate one light), call a pro.
⢠Tiling a floor isn't as easy as doing a backsplash, and it's as much of an art as it is a skill. If you want it to come out level, hire some help.
⢠Any time you're doing more in-depth electrical or plumbing, you should turn to a professional. They'll work to code and ensure you don't have any issues down the line.
MH: What kinds of apps or gadgets are you guys into?
Carrino: We use an app on our phones called Field Lens for project management. I love my Nest app for adjusting my thermostat from anywhere. Also, I use a Sonos home theater system so I can have my music on constantly.
Colaneri: I love to use the Houzz app when I'm looking for design inspiration. And when I want to find new, unique tech or home products, I typically browse uncrate.com. Personally, I love my stud finder. It's rudimentary, but I can't tell you how much time it's saved us.
