She's funny and energetic, and she doesn't take herself too seriously—maybe that's how Naya Rivera manages to bring some heart to a character (lovelorn Santana on Glee) that could easily have been dismissed as a run-of-the mill mean girl. In real life, here's how the 26-year-old keeps her own heart happy and her bod healthy.
Exercise: After friends dragged her to her first cycling class, she was hooked. "My body completely changed when I started cycling. It got lean." She now does twice-weekly classes at Cycle House in Los Angeles.
Nutrition: Naya tries to make a green-juice recipe a couple times a week in the morning "to get things moving." She avoids dairy—she's lactose intolerant—and eats lots of fish. (If she's having a bad day, you can find her at Subway, building a tuna sub with olives, pickles, jalapenos, oregano, and lettuce.) She also recently started taking fish oil and swears by the Lypo-Spheric vitamin C supplement.
Career: She released her first original, non-Glee-produced song this past summer (part of a full album scheduled to launch at a later date). It's called "Sorry" and also features hip-hop recording artist Big Sean, who happens to be her boyfriend. She describes her sound as "rhythmic/pop, urban with a little bit of a '90s twist." Naya says, "It reminds people of the music they used to listen to in junior high or high school—that cool, mellow '90s beat that makes you feel good."
Fashion: Naya doesn't let anyone tell her what to do or think—so why would she take directives on what to wear? "You know what works best [for you], silhouette-wise," she asserts. "Then it's cool to pick a theme for the season and try that out." Her look for fall? Leather trench coats—she recently bought a killer Roberto Cavalli one; now she's in search of the perfect thigh-high boots to match. In every color.
