Grapefruits are great fruits: Citrus juice could keep your kidneys healthy, according to a new study from the U.K.
Researchers discovered that a flavonoid called naringenin—found in grapefruit, oranges, and tomatoes—regulates a protein that decreases growths related to kidney cysts, which can lead to kidney failure.
More evidence of citrus’s power: A 2013 Italian review found drinking orange juice was associated with 12 percent lower odds of kidney stones (which is when substances in urine form a painful mass). Researchers credit the potassium citrate content, which prevents calcium crystals from forming in kidneys.
So drink up—as long as your doc gives you the go-ahead. Some research suggests citrus, especially grapefruit, can have negative interactions with medications like statins, antihistamines, antibiotics, and blood pressure meds.
