Whether your friend is setting you up on a blind date or offering to put you in touch with his lawyer, you may want to decline, says a new study from Germany.
The reason is simple: Buddy bias can cloud your judgment, says study coauthor Daniel Leising, Ph.D.
That may seem obvious, but how often do you ask your pals for help or advice—or trust their wisdom when they refer you to someone else? If a bad referral won’t hurt you, then it’s not a big deal. But if you need to hire someone to help you build a website or repair your car, a friend of a friend—no matter what your pal says about the guy—is a serious gamble, Leising’s research indicates. Third-party opinions from online ratings sites like Angie’s List are a safer bet, the study suggests.
