When Faking It Is a Good Thing

When Faking It Is a Good Thing

Sometimes faking it is a good thing: Actively trying to feel happier can boost your mood, reports new research by Penn State University researchers.

In the study, people who thought about being happier while listening to feel-good tunes actually lifted their mood by up to 16 percent more than those who simply enjoyed the music.

Similar to how psyching yourself up with positive statements before a game or tough workout makes a difference in your performance, your intentions can affect your emotions, says study coauthor Yuna Ferguson, Ph.D.

Tricking your mind into feeling better might not be exactly what you want to do (especially if you’re down in the dumps), but it’s worth a shot. In fact, start by simply smiling. Even if you’re not feeling so hot, the action can lower your heart rate and reduce stress responses, according to recent research from the University of Kansas.
