Even if you’re not deskbound all day, your office can thwart your plans to stay slim. Having overweight coworkers raises your own odds of piling on fat, suggests new research in PLoS One.
In the study, the more overweight colleagues a man communicated with, the more likely he was to be heavy, too.
It’s not just family and friends whose habits can rub off on you and influence your weight; the people you interact with at work also have an impact, says study author Elizabeth Rula, Ph.D.
That doesn’t mean you should junk-food eating coworkers—just counteract their influence by using a standing desk (here’s how to build your own) or holding “walking brainstorms.”
