Hoping a light bulb will go off in your head? It’s as easy as flipping a switch. Turning down the lights near your desk will make you feel more creative, suggests new German research.
Compared to people working in normal or bright office conditions, those occupying a dimly lit workspace scored 16 percent higher on four different tests of creativity, the study shows.
Your physical environment helps determine your psychological mindset, explains study coauthor Anna Steidle, Ph.D., of the University of Hohenheim. And by obscuring or shading the world around you, turning down the lights creates an atmosphere of freedom and openness that encourages your mind to explore new ideas, Steidle adds.
While creativity peaked near total darkness, simply dimming the lights several shades below normal brightness was enough to encourage the creativity boost, Steidle says. So even if the rest of your workplace is well-lit, turning down (or off) the lights in your office will give you the surge
in a matter of seconds, she says. Check out more sneaky ways to trigger creativity.
