Raise the roof! Large rooms make her feel more comfortable opening up, says new research from the Netherlands.
When asked very personal questions—on topics ranging from sexual behavior to substance abuse—people were roughly 17 percent more likely to share their secrets while chatting in a big space as opposed to a small one, according to the study.
The reason: You feel psychologically boxed in when you’re confined to cramped or tiny quarters. And that makes you less likely to reveal personal details about yourself, says study coauthor Vanessa Okken. Sitting too close to someone may also cause them to feel emotionally claustrophobic, and so less likely to bare their soul, Okken says.
If you’re on a date, multiple studies have shown that sharing personal info is the key to hitting it off. So to help her feel at ease, opt for restaurants or bars with high ceilings and spacious rooms. And don’t crowd her during the “getting to know each other” part of the evening, the research suggests. As the night progresses and you develop a rapport, that’s the time to get close.
