Perform Like an MLB All-Star

Perform Like an MLB All-Star

Want proof? Look at the last six All-Star Game MVPs: Melky Cabrera, Prince Fielder, Brian McCann, Carl Crawford, J.D. Drew, and Ichiro Suzuki all had facial hair when they captured their titles to the tune of a combined 10 for 17 (.589) with four HRs and 12 RBIs. It’s a good bet that the player who takes home the award in tonight’s game—catch it at 8 ET on FOX—will at least be rocking some stubble with trophy in hand.

One potential reason: “Ball players are very superstitious,” says former New York Yankees catcher Jorge Posada. “If I got three or four hits in a row, I would leave [my beard]. I would not shave or cut it until something happens.”

But superstition isn’t an excuse to look unruly. Here’s how to sport scruff and still present your best game face:

1. Sit on a Pitch
Anything more than a five o’clock shadow won’t grow overnight, but that doesn’t mean you’re out of luck. While attempting to grow a mustache, allow the rest of the facial hair to grow in, says Bret Reichley of F.S.C. Barber in New York City. Yes, even if you don’t want a beard, put down that razor. You want the option of having an abundant amount of hair to style as you please. Just don’t forget to finish off your look with some Commando Mustache Wax from Brooklyn Grooming to keep it in place. 2. Find the Strike Zone
Take a note from Bryce Harper: Don’t allow your beard to consume your face. Keep your cheeks and neck clear, using your Adam’s apple as an indicator and shaving the area below. For fuller beards, avoid a harsh jawline and fade the edges with a trimmer like the Stainless Steel Lithium Ion+ trimmer from WAHL ($59.97; wahl-store.com). We like it because of its long-lasting battery and compact size.

3. Go for the Double Play
Tackle your dirty scruff and your dry skin with a cleanser like the Extra Conditioning Beard Wash from Bluebeards Original ($22; bluebeardsoriginal.com). Unlike a bar soap that can strip your skin of essential oils, this contains aloe and Vitamin B to soften and soothe both your beard and the skin under it.
