Study participants who took challenging computer-based quizzes were less likely to crave junk food than those who took an easier test; they were also more likely to opt for a low-calorie snack over a rich one.
An intellectually challenging distraction “can cut off desire before it gains control over behavior,” says study author Lotte van Dillen, Ph.D., of Leiden University.
